Donna Price, a housing activist who has experience Donna Price, a housing activist who has experienced homelessness, spoke up at City Council on the need for subsidized, safe, low-income housing in Detroit. "There's not enough room in the shelters, they're not a healthy place for anyone. It's a traumatizing thing to be homeless. Kids need homes, we need more housing. We need more houses, where kids can run, where kids have their own place. They don't need to be cooped up in apartment buildings like sardines. That's not a living for children."
“Santiago-Romero said she drafted the resolution “Santiago-Romero said she drafted the resolution in response to Detroiters who have pushed in recent weeks for the council to shift ARPA dollars toward affordable housing programs. Dozens of residents and assistance groups have expressed concerns about a lack of housing options and the upcoming expiration of pandemic relief funds used to temporarily house evicted Detroiters in hotels.”

Tenants have power. We demand accountability and public spending that reflects the reality of our housing crisis. Safe, affordable homes for all.

She and her son are now homeless and have lost all of their possessions. Jai is still facing a false charge of misdemeanor squatting. She has joined the fight for housing justice and needs our support.

Jai Kiser moved into a home in Detroit in November of 2021, paying a woman named Domonique Alexander to rent the bottom part of a two-family flat. Domonique Alexander signed a lease with Jai and took multiple rent payments from her.

Later in November, someone came to the home claiming to represent the owner of the property. They said that Domonique Alexander was not authorized to rent out the flat. Jai didn't know what to believe and called the police. When the police came to the home in November, they told both parties that this was a civil matter that should be handled through court and that they wouldn't remove anyone.

Sure enough, a company called "Land Contract Detroit" took Jai to court to evict her. Jai appeared for a hearing on April 12, where the judge told her that she had until May 10th to move out.

But a week later, on April 19, Detroit Police officers came to Jai's home and suddenly arrested her for "squatting." Jai tried to explain that she was not a squatter, had paid to rent the home, and that a judge had ruled that she had until May 10th to move. The police didn't listen and arrested Jai in front of her son.

Jai spent the night in jail. By the time she got out the next day, someone had boarded up her home and removed everything in it. Jai and her son lost all of their possessions.

Jai and her son are now living in a motel room. While Jai's old home was within walking distance of her son's school, the motel room is miles away. Jai has had to pay rideshare services to take her son to and from school.

Jai is self-employed and worked out of her home. Being evicted and losing all of their possessions took away her only source of income.

Update: Ms. Griffin vs Gardenview Estates • Last Update: Ms. Griffin vs Gardenview Estates
•
Last week we called Gardenview to demand they stop the eviction and make the overdue repairs they promised. Management manipulated the story to claim the overdue repairs and negligence on behalf of Gardenview was actually damage to the property.
•
Ms. Griffin put her rent money into escrow because of the fact that these repairs were not getting done.
•
We went in person on Monday but the office was closed, which isn’t unusual for them.
•
We will be going to the office tomorrow morning 6/15 and continue to demand they let Ms. Griffin stay in her home of 10 years. Please call on Wednesday to support.

“The conversation comes after dozens of Detroiters and housing activists called for more housing aid at back-to-back City Council meetings. Detroiters are worried about what will happen after the expiration of federal emergency rent aid being used to temporarily house evicted residents in hotels.”
