Update on Poverty Tax Exemption
Low-income homeowners in Detroit may have their property taxes reduced or waived. The home’s taxable value must be $95,000 or less.
The City of Detroit offers a “Poverty Tax Exemption” on an annual basis but you must apply for it. Approximately 30,000 Detroit households are eligible but far, far fewer apply.
The Poverty Tax Exemption is not retroactive, but it should be.

This is particularly for a person with a disability whose only income is Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability (SSD) and becoming homeless, is homeless or is in immediate danger of homelessness. If minor children/grandchildren are part of the household this can sometimes be an added factor in obtaining emergency housing.
